Iāʻoe E Ka Lā - Vol. Two - 1975

Palani Vaughan singing the music of Hawaiʻi’s King David Kalākaua recalling the celebration of his 50th Birthday on November 16, 1886

This volume focuses on the eventful "middle period" (1886-1887) of the reign of Hawaiis last King, David Kalākaua.

King Kalākaua, daring, bold and innovative, had high aspirations for the economic development of Hawaii and made great strides in stretching its horizons. In 1874, while in Washington DC, Kalākaua led a Federal Treaty Commission to successfully gain favorable treatment for American-bound Hawaiian-produced trade goods. Subsequently, in 1881, King Kalākaua ventured forth as the first monarch to tour the world on a good-will mission. On his return, completion of a new grand 'Iolani Palace and his royal coronation in the tradition of Europe's monarchs climaxed the early years of King Kalākaua's reign.

The "middle period" was a time of economic growth and development, influencing and modernizing the Hawalian lifestyle with the latest scientific technology and inventions, the telephone and the electric light. This was a period marked by King Kalākaua's daring attempt to expand the Hawaiian kingdom to include distant Pacific islands of Polynesia. This was also a period highlighted by two grand royal Jubilee celebrations; the first, celebrating his 50th birthday on November 16, 1886 with a month long Jubilee in Hawaiʻi and the second, five months later when the King sent his Queen consort, Kapiʻolani, accompanied by his sister, the then Princess Liliʻuokalani, to England to represent the Hawaiian monarchy at the Jubilee commemorating Queen Victoria's 50th year of reign.

These historic events establish the theme and mood for this commemorative Hawaiian music album, “THE ROYAL JUBILEE” bright, festive and memorable.
