The Hawaiian music in this record album is dedicated to all who love these wonderful islands, the Hawaiian people, their history, their traditions, and most of all their music and hula dances. For without these, the Hawaiian race, or any race of people for that matter, has no foundation on which to build and grow, or more importantly, to survive.

King Kalākaua knew that his people's nationalistic pride was deeply-rooted in knowledge of themselves through their forebearers, the “kūpuna”…that the survival of the Hawaiian, the Kingdom and the monarchy depended on the same. Thus he caused the revival of chant and hula, of legend and lore of Hawaiʻi in an effort to restore that pride.

The results of his efforts have been far-reaching and lasting, for although the Kingdom and Monarchy were taken from their "kūpuna" ancestors nearly a century ago, contemporary Hawaiians are singing and dancing to traditional chants revived or composed during the King’s reign and to the musical songs newly created by Kalākaua(s). But more significantly, contemporary Hawaiians are singing and dancing to new, yet traditionally structured chants and music they are composing today.

This renewed pride in Hawaiian heritage has sparked growth in other ways - particular the creation of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). God willing we will witness further growth and prosperity of the Hawaiian people in more and more meaningful ways in the years to come. But cultural identity as an Hawaiian race must remain intact, if the “Hawaiian” is to survive this prosperity.

Whether you are Hawaiian-blooded or Hawaiian-at-heart, I hope you enjoy the musical experience of this volume of Iāʻoe E Ka Lā.
